Suicide bomber kills 7 Afghans at NATO base

KABUL (Reuters) – A suicide bomb attack outside a NATO base killed seven civilians in southeastern Afghanistan on Wednesday, a local official said, a day after Taliban gunmen and bombers mounted a brazen strike in the same town.

Violence in Afghanistan has surged to its worst level since U.S.-backed Afghan forces overthrew the Taliban in 2001, despite increasing numbers of foreign troops.

Another 21 civilians were wounded in Wednesday's attack by a suicide bomber in a car packed with explosives. An official from the province of the same name said all the victims were laborers working at the NATO base on the outskirts of Khost township.

"U.S. forces ... have encircled the area. The toll may rise," provincial official Wazir Padshah told Reuters by telephone.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties among NATO-led troops.

Khost, on the porous southeastern border with Pakistan and separated by mountains from the rest of Afghanistan, houses a large base for NATO troops, mainly from the United States.

BRAZEN RAID

The attack occurred the morning after a group of Taliban suicide bombers attacked government buildings in the town, one of the most brazen raids by the insurgents in months.

Nine Afghans, including members of the security forces, and 11 insurgents were killed in Tuesday's raid, in which gunbattles were fought for hours. The militants also took a government building and held hostages for hours before being overpowered.

In a separate incident overnight, U.S. forces said they had accidentally killed two civilians and wounded four with air strikes and artillery fire launched against fighters who fired rockets at bases in southeastern Paktika province.

Six insurgents were killed in the strikes, they said.

Civilian casualties have been a cause of increasing anger in Afghanistan. Afghan officials say U.S. forces killed more than 100 civilians in strikes in Farah province in the west of the country last week.

Reuters obtained a list endorsed by the Afghan government with the names, ages and fathers' names of 140 people killed in a battle that included U.S. air strikes in the west of the country last week. Ninety-three of the dead were children -- the youngest an 8-day-old infant, and most of the rest were women.

A U.S. military spokesman disputed the toll and said some of the names may have been fake. He also blamed the Taliban for deliberately putting civilians in danger.

The Farah incident has prompted Afghan President Hamid Karzai to call for an end to air strikes, but he was rebuffed.

The Taliban have vowed to step up their attacks on Afghan cities this year while Washington is in the process of more than doubling its forces in Afghanistan, from 32,000 troops at the beginning of 2009 to a projected 68,000 by year's end.

A roadside bomb killed eight local workers from a construction firm in the eastern province of Nangarhar and another killed three builders working on a road in southern Zabul province, the Interior Ministry said.

The United States now has 47,000 troops in Afghanistan, along with 33,000 from other Western countries.

Most of the new U.S. troops are being deployed to the south to battle a worsening Taliban-led insurgency.

STAR TREK hits USA Box Office starting 8 May 2009

Just how much money will the new Star Trek movie make? That’s a question a lot of people are asking today, as we enter the reboot’s opening weekend with favorable reviews and a successful Thursday night (estimates show it made $7 million from advance screenings). Here’s how I put it into perspective: the only Trek installment I ever saw in the theater is Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, which is the only film in the franchise to gross more than $100 million. And now I’m planning to see J.J. Abrams’ movie, at least to see if it’s actually that much better and cooler than the rest of the franchise. And I think there are a lot of other people out there who are just as curious as I am.

That people are predicting this thing to make nearly as much money in its first week as Voyage Home earned in total should be more ridiculous an idea than it is. However, rebooted franchises, like Halloween and Friday the 13th have previously surprised us with relatively huge openings, so it’s not terribly unlikely that Star Trek could gross at least $100 million by Monday morning. World's thinnest laptop : Dell Adamo

Dell claims its new Adamo notebook is the world's thinnest at 0.65 inches, and it's also crafted for style-conscious fashionistas.

Computer maker Dell has taken the wraps of its new Adamo notebook, which the company is claiming to be the world's thinnest notebook, measuring just 0.65 inches at its thickest. It's also the first member of the company's new high-style Adamo by Dell brand, which Dell hopes will "disrupt people's perceptions" of personal computing, and incidentally, horn in on Apple's cache for offering high-style, elegantly designed computers.

"Great design needs to be timeless and evoke emotion in people", said Dell's senior VP for consumer products Alex Gruzen, in a statement. "While a premium computing experience was assumed for Adamo, the intent was for people to see, touch, and explore Adamo and be rewarded by the select materials and craftsmanship you would expect in a fine watch."

The Adamo notebook features a "unibody" case that's a single piece of milled aluminum (sound familiar?), a 13.4-inch edge-to-edge glass display, and a scalloped backlit keyboard. The system supposedly offers cool and quiet operation with solid state hard drive options, a full range of wireless connectivity features, and a preliminary battery life estimate of five hours of usage on a single charge. The notebook also features a magnetic cover that conveniently puts required licensing stickers out of sight (but one wonders how long until users misplace the covers). At four pounds, the Adamo also comes in a full pound heavier than Apple's MacBook Air.

Part of the Adamo's slim figure and lightweight design comes from Dell externalizing a number of components—just like Apple did with the MacBook Air. Need an DVD or Blu-ray drive? That's available as an external option. Similarly, Dell is offering additional external hard drive storage.

Under the hood, the Adamo starts out with an Intel Core 2 Duo SU9300 processor running at 1.2GHz, 2GB of RAM, a 128GB SSD drive, a 1,366 by 768-pixel 13.4-inch display driven by Intel GS45 integrated graphics, and Windows Vista 64 Bit Home Premium Edition. The unit features two USB 2.0 ports, one combo USB/eSATA port, a DisplayPort output, and Ethernet. The system sports 802.11b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.1 wireless networking. Mobile broadband is available as an option; however, other options are limited to accessories like bags and external drives, rather than faster processors or more storage. There's no way to rev up this initial Adamo model into more of a computing powerhouse.

Dell is accepting pre-orders for the Adamo notebook today (in "Pearl" and "Onyx"), and will begin shipping units worldwide on March 26; prices start at $1,999. Dell is also promoting the system with a stylish ad campaign featuring images from British photographer Nadav Kander. The Adamo might be easy on the eyes, but at first glance it would seem to be a machine that's more about style than technological substance, like a bit of a netbook for folks easily influenced by high-fashion photos.
