JUNIPER Networks released TX Matrix Plus Enables Service Providers

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Juniper Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:JNPR - News), the leader in high-performance networking, today introduced the TX Matrix Plus, a multi-chassis core routing system that enables service providers to deliver innovative services with maximum profitability and investment protection. It's powerful to Build a Scalable Network That Can Readily Adapt to Changing Business models. Interconnecting multiple T1600 core routers, the TX Matrix Plus is designed to work with the Juniper Control System (JCS) 1200 to allow the virtualization of routing systems, networks and services—bringing a new dimension of flexibility and scalability to the network core.

“We are very pleased to see Juniper bring virtualization to the core with the TX Matrix Plus multi-chassis routing system,” said Kempei Fukuda, director, global network department, NTT Communications Corporation. “With the TX Matrix Plus and other advances announced today, Juniper is providing solutions that enable service providers to deploy highly scalable, flexible networks which can help protect investments and drive profitability.”

“Delivering innovative, reliable services requires a highly flexible and scalable core routing system at the heart of the network, and our investment in Juniper’s T1600 routing platform is in line with this strategy,” said Mr. Fadhil Ansari, senior executive vice president of engineering, Etisalat. “Juniper’s announcement of the new TX Matrix Plus multi-chassis routing system ensures our investment protection and enables us to build and scale a very efficient, flexible and reliable core network.”

The TX Matrix Plus leverages the superior technology of Juniper’s T1600, the industry’s highest capacity, most energy efficient single-chassis core router. The T1600 and TX Matrix Plus lower total cost of ownership by delivering up to 25 percent more routing capacity in the half the footprint, and with up to 40 percent less power than competing solutions. The TX Matrix Plus architecture is designed to support up to 25 Tbps of capacity by integrating up to sixteen T1600s into a single multi-chassis routing node. This multi-chassis router can be managed as a single, unified router, or combined with the JCS 1200 to enable the secure virtualization of core routers—which creates efficiencies by consolidating networks, services and functionality.

Virtualization in the Network Core

Virtualization has seen rapid adoption in the data center and elsewhere because of its ability to increase efficiency and reduce costs by sharing and consolidating resources. In the core of the network, regulatory, operational, organizational and security issues have made the virtualization of disparate networks and services more challenging. With the TX Matrix Plus and JCS 1200, Juniper is addressing these challenges by enabling the hardware virtualization of highly scalable, adaptable core routers. Juniper core routers can be partitioned—on a per slot basis—into multiple virtual routers, each of which might represent services or network element types, and which can share resources such as interconnecting links and uplinks. This unique ability ensures service providers can maintain the appropriate levels of administrative and service-specific separation, security and management while still recognizing the significant efficiency and cost-savings benefits of virtualization.

Service providers who leverage the TX Matrix Plus and other Juniper solutions to virtualize their core networks will be able to rapidly introduce new services on their existing infrastructure, while still managing each network and service individually. This dramatically speeds the introduction of new services, and also opens up a range of new business models and partnership opportunities, such as the ability to deliver “Open Garden” services, virtual network operator, network as a service (NaaS) and network sharing.

“Just as virtualization and the intelligent partitioning of resources has become the standard for optimizing data center resources, network virtualization will bring a new dimension of flexibility and scalability to the network infrastructure,” said Ray Mota, chief research officer, Synergy Research Group. “With the announcement today, Juniper is leading the way in this important area, enabling customers to streamline asset utilization with hardware logical routers partitioned at the line card level.”

Scaling the Virtualized Core

To allow customers to truly unlock the power of virtualization and meet increasing demand for capacity, Juniper is delivering a range of supporting technologies for both single- and multi-chassis T1600s. As the only core router on the market with 100 Gigabits of capacity per slot, the T1600 is uniquely optimized for supporting the ultra-high capacity links necessitated by virtualized core routers.

Additionally, Juniper is continuing to expand on its optical integration capabilities with new integrated G.709 optical transport network (OTN) interfaces and GMPLS features. These enhanced integrated optical capabilities further eliminate the need for standalone optical transponders, leading to a significant reduction in space and power.

By collapsing layers in the network and consolidating network interfaces, virtualization and the OTN interfaces can drive down the cost-per-bit of transporting network services—enabling service providers to extract maximum value from their network and fueling profitability.

“Virtualization is the de facto operational model for data centers, because the cost and operational advantages it provides are indisputable,” said Opher Kahane, senior vice president and general manager, High-End Systems Business Unit, Juniper Networks. “The TX Matrix Plus brings these same advantages of virtualization to core networks in the industry’s most flexible multi-chassis routing system. This breakthrough can lower total cost of ownership by enabling our customers to build scalable, reliable networks that can deliver innovative services with maximum profitability and investment protection.”

Enabling Three-Dimensional Scale

The new platforms and enhancements introduced today build on over a decade of innovation in service provider networks, to enable customers to build and scale the most efficient, flexible and reliable core networks. Across the T-series portfolio, Juniper platforms enable customers to flexibly scale in multiple dimensions across the forwarding, control and services plane. Existing customers of T640s can scale the forwarding plane by migrating to T1600s, TX Matrixes and now the TX Matrix Plus—all of which can be done non-disruptively with maximum flexibility.

The JCS 1200 is the only independent control plane scaling platform in the industry, uniquely delivering the ability to scale control plane capacity without impacting forwarding plane performance—a capability critical to the ability to virtualize core networks and services.

All of these platforms are powered by JUNOS® software, a single operating system running routing, switching and security platforms from Juniper Networks. By enabling customers and partners to develop applications on JUNOS software through the Partner Solution Development Platform (additional fees apply), Juniper is also the only company in the industry that enables customers to scale the services plane with unique and customized services. Customers and partners can use the Partner Solution Development Platform to develop and deliver of innovative new value-add services for improved productivity and profitability.

The TX Matrix Plus is expected to be available in 3Q09. The OTN interfaces will be available in the current quarter.
